Columbine = Aquilegia

With beautiful bell-shaped flowers, columbine is an excellent garden perennial with many colourful hybrid varieties to choose from. They are self seeding. At the moment some new ones in different colours are growing indoors to be planted later in the garden.  Pink ones are under a plum tree, in shade, so images not very clear. But on another place they were posing in the sun with a bee!

Irises (not bearded)

Irises are wonderful garden plants. The word Iris means rainbow. Irises come in many colors such as blue and purple, white and yellow, pink and orange, brown and red, and even black.
The genus Iris has about 200 species and is native to the North Temperate regions of the world. The habitat of irises also varies a lot. Some irises grow in deserts, some in swamps, some in the cold far north, and many in temperate climates. Bearded Iris and Siberian Iris are two of the most common types of irises grown.
Since Iris is the Greek goddess for the Messenger of Love, her sacred flower is considered the symbol of communication and messages. Therefore the flower iris in the language of flowers symbolizes eloquence. Based on their colour, irises convey varied messages. A purple iris is symbolic of wisdom and compliments. A blue iris symbolizes faith and hope. A yellow iris symbolizes passion while white iris symbolizes purity. A gift of iris can be used to convey many emotions.

I love irises and grow them for years. Both sorts are beautiful and they have a slight sweet scent…

Say It With Roses

IMG_3586 (2)  HB

“You’re beautiful, but you’re empty…One couldn’t die for you. Of course, an ordinary passerby would think my rose looked just like you. But my rose, all on her own, is more important than all of you together, since she’s the one I’ve watered. Since she’s the one I put under glass, since she’s the one I sheltered behind the screen. Since she’s the one for whom I killed the caterpillars (except the two or three butterflies). Since she’s the one I listened to when she complained, or when she boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing at all. Since she’s my rose.”
― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince

China Town

China Town’s soft pink petals are cupped with featherings of spring green and accented with deeper pink. This is a tulip that makes you stop and appreciate the gentle beauty of spring gardens as they unfold, with sophisticated pastels against newly unfurled foliage. The leaves are silvery green with an attractive ivory white edging.

I plant them each year as the rabbits dig them out during the winter. This year they have grown in pots: my babies…

Happy weekend full of flowers…

Tulip parrot Rococo is just the thing for a tremendous show in our gardens; they have curious large fiery red flowers with feathered yellow green edges.

These bold beautiful blooms make perfect cut flowers for indoor displays!  They bloom mid to late spring. Tulip parrot Rococo are ideal for rock gardens, borders and containers…

#macromonday Blue Poppy

I’ve  always  loved  growing unusual, exotic, and beautiful plants as much as I love growing primroses. Meconopsis was one of them. Finally I could get one  from abroad for a price I had never paid for a plant before. Unfortunately  it survived only a few days. So I looked around and found them at a reasonable price, and ordered five…  They are still alive, and now blooming as you see them. Yesterday I put an order for another 24! Yes 24 more blue poppies for this crazy person who loves blue flowers more than other colours…

Sorry I had to put my name differently because I found out that someone could download one of my images for herself! I thought WordPress was protected against such things. I guess I have to ask them…
